Intraoral registration with the Gothic arch tracing is a method to obtain condylar central position in their glenoid fossae. Since Prof. Dr. Alfred Gysi the Gothic arch tracing is the most reliable repeatable and only scientific method to find condylar central position.

The Principle of Tripod-Stability

The principle of the three-point table explains the stability of the mandible central position in relation to the temporomandibular joints.

The two legs painted in black and white are placed in two cups and the third leg rests on a flat surface. When a load is placed on the table, the black and white legs will glide into the centre of the cups becoming stable in their lowest part. The third leg glides correspondingly on the flat surface.

The two black and white legs represent the ascending rami of the mandible with their condyles, the two cups represent the articular fossae. The third leg represents the central supporting stylus and the loading weight represents the light pressure of the closing muscles while mandibular movements are executed for drawing the Gothic arch.

Experience and research by TMJ-radiographs prove a high reliability of the Gothic arch tracing method.

Evaluation of Gothic Arch Tracings

	Classical, pointed form The symmetry indicates undisturbed movements in the joints and uniform muscle forces.
	Classical flat form The picture indicates distinct flat lateral movements of the condyles in the fossae.
	Weak Gothic arch tracing The picture indicates a lax and negligent performance of the movements, most of all of the backward components. The registration must be repeated: Stronger movements must be demanded from the patient.
	Assymmetrical form The tracing indicates a distinct inhibition of the forward component of the lateral movement in the right joint.
	Miniature Gothic arch tracing The tracing points to cramp-like movements, badly fitting and pain-causing record blocks, edentulous state of long standing with inhibited movement in the joints, badly constructed prosthetic appliances, etc.
	Vertical line protrudes beyond the arrow point This tracing was produced either by forcible retraction or pushing of the mandible. It is, however, possible that the Gothic arch was obtained with a protruded mandible.

The upper & lower plates are designed to be used both for the dentate & partially dentate patient. This eliminates the time consuming manufacturing of individual plates or bite blocks for the registration.

They can be used for the intra-oral registration in endentulous cases, mounted on wax-bite-blocks.

Set No 106: includes 4 different sized transfer-plates with screwed-on plexiglass plates to fix the condyles' central position on traced Gothic arch in a plastic stand; a triple-purpose screwdriver (1. for setting the plexiglass plate, 2. for marking the Camper-plane on the patient's cheek, 3. for setting the tip of the vertical pin on the Condylator).

Instruments to be used for the construction of individual registration plates in natural dentate cases.

Set No 110: includes the material for 10 upper and 10 lower individual registration plates with crayon and sticky wax. All these parts are re-usable.
